Uncode Duello

2004 to 2011
Italy

As the A Short Apnea‘s experience came to an end, we met to think over our collaboration through several bands. In twelve years we exchanged experiences, played music and experimented, read and listened; we had strong convergences and divisions, born and dissolved plans. Years in which we have developed, sometimes unconsciously, our personal codes which have been the spirit of our relationship with music and with the people we created it with (in the past and now). Therefore we thought that it was the moment to create something that is the expression of all our experiences lived together.
So Uncode Duello is born like a duo, where the codes are denied and revealed and re-elaborated at the same time, where the collaborations with new and old friends are the field to develop in a deeper way our communication and our way to be through music.

Lots of adjectives could define this album made by Paolo Cantù and Xabier Iriondo, talentuous italian musician who also worked to A Short Apnea, Tasaday, Six Minute War Madness, Four gardens in one.  This project began more by an idea, a conversation or a project but the audio result is impressive.

Ex Æquo is the second release from the duo Paolo Cantù and Xabier Iriondo, frantic musicians, movers of wide series of live and studio projects. And Ex Æquo benefits of these experiences: beginning from the huge deployment of instruments (electric, table and baritone guitars, organs and piano, clarinets and tapes, kalimba and electronics) to the collaborations: behind the drums we find again Cristiano Calcagnile and Lucio Sagone (already in the debut album) Claudia De Simone (Agatha) and Roberto Bertacchini (Sinistri, The Shipwreck Bag Show). At the voice there’s the “old” friend Federico Ciappini (with the duo in the mid-90s rock heroes Six Minute War Madness) to confirm as for Uncode Duello, this band is the latest project of a story started years ago with Six Minute War Madness and A Short Apnea.

Thanks to this contributions Ex Æquo shows a full-coloured sound, a kaleidoscope of rock songs, nervous and intense instrumental suites, proudly recorded and mixed by themselves.

Uncode Duello is a long job creation of experimental music. Chaotic jazz, improved no-wave, spoken words from other world, heavy sounds landscape…. Lots of adjectives could define this album made by Paolo Cantù and Xabier Iriondo, talentuous italian musician who also worked to A Short Apnea, Tasaday, Six Minute War Madness.

This project began more by an idea, a conversation or a project but the audio result is impressive. Many guests musicians from Italy joined the recording session of this album. The album has born from two long sessions of improvisation with two different drummers: Cristiano Calcagnile and Lucio Sagone, and from the following selection of recordings, interacting with other people we asked a contribution: Federico Ciappini and Andrea Reali‘s voices, Alberto Morelli‘s piano and the voice. The explored territory is on the border of the “sonorous landscape” in which A Short Apnea moved, in a musical limbo where free-rock and improvisation are the masters.

Techniques and skills recall the ways that A Short Apnea used in past. The massive insertion of voices, concrete musics and electronic treatments imposes a different vision of arrangements and mixing.
Uncode Duello is published by Wallace Records and Ebria Records, old and new friends, expressions of a common vision to mean the independence.
